Pride Month - We're here, we're queer!

Pride Month is a global occasion to celebrate the diversity of the LGBTQIA+ community and stand up for their rights and visibility. It's about showing love, pride and acceptance for all gender identities and sexual orientations. We are allys of the queer community and we celebrate the colorful and amazing world we live in. And would like to provide you with background information on Pride Month and the LGBTQIA+ community that is relevant to the occasion.

Queer Community - Be out and proud.

The queer community is a diverse, colorful community of people who do not conform to the heteronormative order of gender and sexuality. It includes lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, asexual, queer and many other identities. The community fights for equality, visibility and acceptance and celebrates the diversity of individual identities and relationships.

What does LGBTQIA+ mean?

The queer community is often referred to as LGBTQIA+. The abbreviation LGBTQIA+ is made up of the English terms lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersecuals and asexual . The plus (+) at the end includes all unmentioned groups that are not directly covered by the abbreviation. An example of this is pansexual .


The background to Pride Month & Christopher Street Day

Pride Month takes place annually in June. In the period from 01.06. - 30.06. the queer community stands up for their rights, their sexual orientation and gender identity and promotes more awareness and tolerance.

Pride Month is based on the Stonewall uprising of 1969, which is considered a milestone in the history of the fight for LGBTQIA+ rights. The riot happened at the Stonewall Inn, a bar in New York's Greenwich Village. On the night of June 28, 1969, LGBTQIA+ people resisted repeated police raids and harassment. The uprising lasted several days and sparked nationwide protests for the rights and visibility of the queer community. The Stonewall Uprising is considered the starting point of the modern LGBTQIA+ movement and inspired the fight for equality, acceptance and the recognition of the rights of queer people worldwide.

By the way: In Germany, the term Christopher Street Day (also CSD for short) has established itself for Pride Month. It is named after Christopher Street in New York City, where the 1969 Stonewall riots took place.

How can Allys support the queer community?

Allys are people who, while not self-identifying as queer, express solidarity with the queer community and are actively committed to equality, acceptance, and support. They are allies fighting against discrimination and prejudice by standing up for the rights and needs of queer people.

Pride rainbow flag

The most well-known symbol of the LGBTQIA+ community is the rainbow flag. Gilbert Baker, a US designer, created the rainbow flag in 1978. The colorful Pride Flag is often carried or flown during Pride Month. It not only symbolizes the pride of the LGBTQIA+ community, but also represents peace and the desire for change.
